There are different ways to plan meals for you and your group. Some people assign a “head chef” who buys all the food and coordinates all the meals. If that works for you, fine. But over the years (and I’ve been doing this for longer than I care to admit!), my friends and I have figured out a fun and efficient way of doing meals that I’d like to share with you.

Divide up your group into...teams...So each team gets a certain meal on a certain day

It works like this. Divide up your group into “couples” or “two’s” or “teams.” They can be spouses, pairs of friends, adult siblings, whatever you like. Then divide up the total number of meals for your outing, and assign them evenly to the different teams. So each team gets a certain meal on a certain day; given the number of days you’ll be spending at the lake, the schedule may rotate more than once. My husband and I always volunteer to create the first big meal on board. It’s a lot of fun—plus, this way, we can spend the rest of the outing relaxing and enjoying everyone else’s cuisine!

Make your meal a good meal. A complete meal. Include everything it will require: all the courses, all the fixings, and so on. If it’s something like a casserole, it’s easy to make it in advance and bring it aboard in a cooler chest.

For our groups, breakfast and dinner count as “meals”; lunch is always a combination of leftovers and snacks. (Your mileage may vary! So feel free to tweak this strategy to your group’s needs—and stomachs.

You might laugh, but I've seen people bring deep fryers for cooking a turkey. Don't do it.

First-time houseboaters always wonder about planning meals. And rightly so: Dining can make or break your houseboat experience. I’ve been here at Lake Powell for a long, long time (I first arrived here in 1989), so I can tell you, from experience, the easy ways to make each meal a success.

Divide the duties

The best method, I’ve found, is to carve up your party into sections, with each section responsible for a dinner and a breakfast. (You can do a lunch as a meal, or as a snack, as my colleague Gail Buckley noted in her article on this topic.) Once meals are assigned in advance, there’s less chance of anyone forgetting anything. Be sure to pack your special spices and things you won’t be able to get at the store. Speaking of which…

Shop at the last minute

That sounds suspiciously easy, doesn’t it? Well, let me qualify that advice. I’m based here at Wahweap Marina in Southlake, and we’re only about ten minutes from the town of Page (read: “Walmart”!), so you can get all your perishables just before you board so they’re nice and fresh, and will keep the longest. If you’re houseboating out of Northlake, at Bullfrog Marina, you’ll need to do all your shopping in advance. It’s nice and secluded up there—the way lots of people prefer it.

But if you do start down here at Wahweap, I suggest you shop really early in the morning or really late in the day. That’s because all the supermarkets in Page get jammed with people in the middle of the day—you guessed it—stocking up for their houseboats. So avoid the crowds.

What not to bring

You might laugh, but I’ve seen people bring deep fryers for cooking a turkey. Don’t do it. Those same people were the ones who caused fire damage to the soffit of the overhanging deck. Honestly. Each boat includes a kitchen and a grill, so take advantage.

How to get your stuff here

About 90 percent of our visitors arrive by car. They’ll tow big box trailers, loaded to the gills. Or they’ll tow a powerboat to bring along, and load it up with gear and coolers. Either way works. And if you don’t have a powerboat, be sure to rent one! (Check out this great article we’ve posted about powerboats and other water toys.)

Can you overload your houseboat? While anything is possible, the typical family will not overload our typical houseboat. They may tend to load it incorrectly or unbalance the boat. But we can help with that. That’s why we’re here.

Pre-board if you can

It comes with a slight additional cost, but this service is sure worth it. Consider this: It can take hours for you to load up your houseboat. The different members of your party may well arrive at different times. So if you’ve got an 8 a.m. check-in, you may not leave the dock until noon! That’s half a day of your vacation spent.

With pre-boarding, you can load up your houseboat the night before. You can even spend the night on board, since the craft is hooked up to shore power. Then when you get up the next morning, you’re the first to get your houseboat instruction—and the first to be on your way.

Pre-boarding is limited. Be sure to book yours in advance.

Leave the cooking to us

We have more than houseboats here at Wahweap. We also have some pretty amazing chefs, as well as chef-houseboats that can accompany your party and serve up gourmet meals right where you’ve beached your boat. We’ll cater to your every whim—and your every meal. That’s breakfast, lunch, and dinner for your entire stay.

As you might have guessed, this service isn’t inexpensive. But boy is it ever worth it.

“But isn’t there another way to save on cooking effort?” you may ask.

There is.

Simply contact our Food and Beverage department, and we can do all the pre-work for you: Shopping, labeling, providing all the ingredients and instructions. Then you’ve got your meals all ready to go. It’s delicious, it’s more affordable than full-on catering, and as you might have guessed, it’s pretty popular. You’ll get a selection, and pick our your choices, and you’re set.

However you choose to do it, I think your meals will be great. But of course I believe that houseboat meals, at Lake Powell, always taste best.

Count on being good and far from the nearest market, so plan and pack carefully.

People often ask me if there’s a secret to successful meals when you’re houseboating. I don’t think there’s one secret.

I think there are two.

For me, it’s all about the group you’ll be houseboating with. I’m still in my late 20s, so I’ve gone on two very different types of houseboat vacations: 1) with family, and 2) with my friends. And as it turns out, the meals—from the planning, to the cooking, to the cleanup—vary quite differently, depending upon the group. So in this article, I’m going to describe both ways… both “secrets,” if you will.

With family

When I go houseboating with my family, there’s a wide range of ages aboard: everyone from toddlers to parents in their 50s. Obviously, the littlest ones can’t cook (or pay), so the labor (and the expenses) get divided among us elders.

My family has done a lot of camping, and houseboating is very similar, in terms of meals. Count on being good and far from the nearest market, so plan and pack carefully. Don’t forget condiments, snacks, and so on.

My family is also very structured when it comes to meals. My parents like to take charge, and I’m happy to let them. They’ll write up menus/tasks and distribute them in advance: “Tuesday will be hot dogs and burgers, with Bill and Sally in charge; Wednesday will be Mexican night; Thursday will be homemade pizza,” etc.

Even with the division of labor, it’s a fun group effort. Everyone pitches in to clean up after meals, so the place is nice and tidy if we want to watch a movie at night. It’s all very structured and organized and makes for nice smooth sailing, both literally and figuratively.

And in case you couldn’t tell by now, I was using it as a setup for the other end of the spectrum:

With friends

It couldn’t be more different. My old college buddies are more casual, and less structured. You’d think the only thing they can remember to pack is the drinks.

So while I’m happy to be part of the crew when I’m with my family, I take charge with my friends. I’m the captain. One of my trusted and most responsible friends will serve as first mate. (This way, I’m not captain 24/7, and get to have fun, too.)

I’ll do the shopping in advance. I buy the food; they pay me back. I wait until the end of the trip, because I’ll add the fuel bill to the tab.

It doesn’t sound quite fair, does it? I mean, I’m the one shelling out all the money up front. I’m the one doing all the shopping. How does it balance out?

With labor!

When I’m captain, my friends do all the manual labor. They do the cooking, the serving, the cleaning. They dig the anchors. They wash dishes. You might think that this would cause a mutiny, but it’s not the case at all. My friends love it! It’s part of the adventure, part of the experience. (And the meals I plan, like spaghetti, are easy.) In fact, when the trip is over and I calculate how much they owe me, they often offer to over-pay. They’re, in short, good friends. Which leads to my final bit of meal-planning advice:

Learn from your mistakes

No one wants to mess up when it comes to houseboating, but when you’re orchestrating, say, a dozen friends who haven’t all done this together before, you can’t be perfect. But you’ll see where you erred. At the end of the trip, you’ll hear yourself thinking, “Wow, Joe and Suzy didn’t do any work! I’m not so sure I’ll invite them back the next time.” On the other hand, you’ll also have thoughts like, “I was pleasantly surprised by the great job Rick and Cindy did—and I didn’t realize they were such good cooks!”

So your next time out, you’ll be able to have your cake and eat it, too.

Let me start with a confession: I think the title of this article is misleading. Every houseboat vacation is special! Here at Lake Powell, there’s so much to see and do, it’s just amazing. But there are still fun and easy ways to make your houseboating excursion even more memorable—and custom-tailored to your group and your interests.

Go for the Hoodies

These days, it’s really easy to jump online and order custom-imprinted apparel and accessories. I love seeing a houseboat where everyone’s wearing their own “Smith Family Reunion” t-shirts or however they print them up. (I’ve seen some customized even more, where on the back, they’ll be labeled “Grandmom,” “Grandpop,” and “Little Pete.”) Some houseboating groups come to the lake to celebrate a success from their jobs, so company-themed goodies carry the day. And there’s more than t-shirts: you can do hoodies for chilly evenings, kerchiefs, koozies, water bottles, pretty much anything. They don’t cost much when you buy them, but they sure seem priceless when you’re out on the lake.

Plan a Theme Night

This is one I’ve always enjoyed with family and friends. You can do something like “Around The World” (one of our “stops,” for example, featured Mexican food, costumes, and props). I’ve seen houseboaters stage a “Pirate” theme, complete with eye-patches and a playful Jolly Roger flag. Some have done a “Survivor”-themed outing, replete with crazy challenges; whoever loses is out the next night. (And no, they don’t get “voted off the houseboat,” LOL!)

Speaking of TV-show-inspired themes, one of my favorites is based on the popular game show, “Minute to Win It.” In case you’re unfamiliar with the show, it features family-friendly contests, using common household items, that must be completed in 60 seconds or less. I still remember one in which our “contestants” had to tie an empty tissue box behind them, and shake their hips to try and get three ping-pong balls to fall out! Needless to say, be sure to shoot video of stuff like this; it will have you laughing for years to come. It’s easy to search the web for different ““Minute to Win It”-style games. And be sure to bring prizes for the winners. For the adults, our prizes might be a nice alcoholic drink; for the kids, they might be coloring books, floaties, or beach balls.

We’ve also done cooking competitions: Everyone votes to determine who made the best meal of the trip. We’ll give away prizes (such as funny pot-holders); it’s also easy to make a printed award or trophy such as “The Golden Skillet.” For more ideas about cooking and meals, be sure to check out my other article  devoted exclusively to that subject.

Go for the Gold

Here’s a fun idea that goes beyond the houseboat. Stage a family Olympics event! At Northlake where I’m based, there are lots of beaches where you can do track-and-field events. Of course, there’s always swimming. But you can invent your own Olympic games, including water skiing, wakeboarding, and water-sliding—remember, every single houseboat that we rent at Lake Powell includes its own slide.

Get Closer to the Heavens

If you think the opportunities to enjoy nature’s wonders at Lake Powell stop when the sun goes down, you need only look up to see how wrong you are. Especially here at Northlake, where we pride ourselves on our seclusion, there is simply zero light pollution. If you haven’t been here before, prepare to be dazzled by the brightest, most star-packed skies you’ve ever seen. Bring a telescope; even binoculars are great. Check online to see if your trip overlaps any of the year’s meteor showers. And before you come here, be sure to download any of the popular sky-gazing apps for your smartphone or tablet. They’re fun and educational, too: Simply hold your device up to the sky, and you’ll be shown which constellations and planets are where.

Pack activities for imperfect weather

Sometimes, especially in spring and late fall, it can get rainy or windy here at the lake. So be sure you bring things to keep you occupied when you’re inside the boat during off weather. All our houseboats include a DVD player, so bring some movies. Load your phone, tablet, or iPod with music; you can plug in and play tunes. (Since we’re far from big cities, don’t count on radio reception for your entertainment.) Pack games for the kids—and adults. We like to play board games and card games; cribbage tournaments are popular among my friends.

And of course, read! Bring books, load books onto your devices, and bring books for the kids. I like to bring magazines, too: Just before a trip, I’ll raid the impulse aisle at my local supermarket, and stock up on carefree reading that’s enjoyable in any weather.

Houseboating is so much fun. You get to enjoy the beauty of Lake Powell, and the company of family and friends.

But what if you want, well, more? As a proud Lake Powell veteran, I can tell you about some of the things I’ve seen, and done, that go beyond the ordinary houseboat outing. Some of these just might inspire you…

Theme Nights

I’ve seen lots of family reunions here at the lake, with big groups all decked out in matching t-shirts. There are Hawaiian nights (read my colleague Gail Buckley’s article about theme nights for more details) and tropical nights and so on, but my favorite has got to be Pirate Night.

This isn’t hard to do. But it’s a lot of fun. The costumes can range from the traditional to the grown-up. Similarly, the beverages can range from the kid-friendly soda-grog to the yo-ho-ho bottle of rum. Can you say Arrrrr?!

Water Slides

These are common here, too—but that doesn’t make them any less fun. If you want to make one yourself, just get a big roll of sheet plastic (such as Visqueen), and unfurl it on a steep beach. Get it wet—many people bring a pump and/or generator just for the purpose—and off you go. I’ve seen water slides run 100 feet or more! It’s like your own private theme park.

Battle of the Bands

Sure, all our houseboats have stereo systems. But some of our guests like to create their own music. While the guitar-around-the-campfire sing-along is pretty commonplace (but again, no less fun!), I’ve seen people pack—and set up—entire rock bands! Personally, I think that’s a ton of work; just a drum kit is a project unto itself. But I have to admire the people who do this. Many set up stage on the top deck. The more ambitious ones will actually set up everything on a beach. I’m not sure how they pay their “roadies.” Perhaps in beer?

The Ultimate Get-together

When I first sat down to write this article, I was trying to think of a good unique experience that I could share firsthand. And then it hit me: I got married here at Lake Powell. (And then my wife hit me, for taking too long to remember it!)

It was an event. Personally, I will tell you it was awesome. We had eight houseboats. Nearly 100 guests. (Remember, our 59-foot houseboats sleep 12.) We were out on the lake for about five days. For those who didn’t stay aboard a houseboat, we’d shuttle them to the wedding beach via powerboat. That was how we got the preacher here. (He had a ball hanging out with us after the ceremony was over.)

We packed 12 chairs per boat. We rented one of those big shade tents. We brought potted plants to adorn the altar. We selected the beach where they filmed the movie Maverick. The bridal party was dressed formal—yet barefoot. It was, in a word, awesome.

Other Weddings

I’m not the first—or only—one to get married here at Lake Powell. We actually host a lot of weddings. We offer catering. We have a special events coordinator to handle it all. I’ve even seen big weddings which have used generators on the beach to power the equipment (the houseboat gennies can’t handle that stuff), and even employed our tour boats (such as the Canyon Princess) to shuttle the guests to the ceremony.

If you’re thinking of tying the knot here, you could do a lot worse.

But What About the Weather?

In mid summer, it rains here almost every day. You can get dumped on. And there’s no real “indoors” to escape to.

It rained on my wedding. The winds kicked up. The guests hung onto our big tent to keep it in place. We all got soaked. And a half hour later, the rains were gone, the beach was steaming in the sun, and I said “I do” to my new bride.

We both wouldn’t have had it any other way.

You’ve marked those days on the calendar. You’ve made the reservation. You’re ready to go houseboating! What could be more fun?

How about: Houseboating with planned activities?

Here are just a few ideas from my houseboating vacations with families and friends. This list is by no means exhaustive; consider it a springboard for more great ideas of your own:

Beach You to It!

The first thing you want to do when you houseboat is to find a good beach to call your own. It’s not only where you anchor; it’s also where you play!

I think the simplest beach games are the most fun. If you haven’t played it, try ladder ball: That’s where you toss a bola (two balls connected by a short string) onto a plastic ladder to score points. You can get a set cheap on Amazon; heck, you can make your own for free.

Then there’s cornhole. If the name doesn’t ring a bell, the visual might: Picture one of those flat boards you’ve seen at carnivals; the object is to toss a beanbag into the hole at the end of the board from a distance.

The joy of these games is that they’re so easy, anything goes. I’ve read, for example, that in cornhole, “the ugliest person goes first.” I’ve also read that all of these can double as great drinking games (beer Frisbee, anyone?), but don’t quote me on that.

Bigger Action

If you’re looking to work up more of a sweat, there’s no better beach sport than beach volleyball. You can set up a badminton net, too. In fact, some of our beaches here are so big, I’ve seen people set up soccer games. That’s “European football,” but why stop there? My friends and I have often played American football, in the form of flag football (where, instead of tackling, you need to yank a Velcro flag off an opponent’s belt).

Choose your captains, and then divide your teams to be evenly matched, and by that, I mean “by skill level, not size.” I distinctly remember one game in which all the small guys beat all the big guys!

Foul-weather Friends

Plan on spending some of your time in the boat, because rain showers come and go here at the lake. All our rental houseboats can play DVDs, so be sure to pack a few movies to choose from.

Watching a movie, even with friends, however, doesn’t provide much opportunity for interaction. That’s why I recommend that you bring playing cards, board games, things like that. I like games like Catchphrase, Pictionary, Scrabble, and Trivial Pursuit; they keep everyone connected and having fun.

Of course, you’ll want quiet time, too. That’s what books and magazines (including those on your phone or tablet) are for, along with things like crossword and word-search puzzles.

What About the littlest ones?

For extended families (like mine) with little kids or toddlers, you need to accommodate them—and their parents. The smallest ones will need a “pack-and-play” or “play fortress,” as well as someone to watch them. Knowing that you can’t leave the little ones unattended, be sure to offer some break time for beleaguered parents, sort of an “I’ll watch the kids this time while you’re on the hike” type of arrangement.

That said, who doesn’t know a kid who doesn’t love to play on the beach? Pack lots of sunscreen, bring a shovel and pail, and turn them loose!

Gail Buckley: [Summary Here]

There are so many places to visit when you come to Lake Powell, you could write a book about them. (Actually, people have written books about them, and one of my favorites is The Boater’s Guide to Lake Powell: Featuring Hiking, Camping, Geology, History & Archaeology, by Michael R. Kelsey; check it out.) But what’s that one must-see place that I bring people to, when they’ve never been here before? You could make great arguments for the inspirational view of Rainbow Bridge, or perhaps Moki Canyon, or the kayak paradise of the Escalante River arm, but my hands-down choice is Defiance House. You have simply got to see this place.

What is Defiance House?

Defiance House is an original cliff dwelling built by the Ancestral Puebloans more than 700 years ago. It was named by the archeologists who discovered it, because it featured intimidating pictographs (rock drawings) showing warriors with clubs and shields. The scientists even found intact bowls within—with scraps of food still in them!

Those pictographs are still there. The food was eaten by the archeologists—oh, I’m just kidding. I’m sure it was analyzed in some lab somewhere. But here’s the thing about Defiance House: It’s not just one the best preserved structures at the lake. It’s one you can actually go inside. How cool is that?

How to Get There

Simply boat north, about 11 miles, heading up the middle fork of Forgotten Canyon (yes, that’s another of our natural wonders here) about three miles, and anchor there. I recommend you take a power boat (and we rent them if you need one); it’s the fastest way. From there, Defiance House is just a short hike from the beach. It’s only about a half a mile—and even less in summer, when the water level is higher.

Since it’s so accessible (there’s no strenuous climbing involved), it’s perfect for the whole family; and since it’s close to us here at Northlake, it’s an easy day trip.

Why it’s Special

I love Defiance House because it’s one of the few places where you can get up close and personal with these ancient Anasazi ruins. You can touch them. You can climb down a ladder and sit in the same little room, called a kiva, that the ancients sat in. You can see the pictographs. There are numerous other ruins in the area to explore. There are often park rangers there, who can regale you with fascinating historical tidbits. And you can take some of the best photos there.

Where to Stay

Defiance House is about a half hour away from our marina by power boat, and there are lots of beaches right there, where you can anchor and camp. And because Defiance House is so popular, lots of people do just that. When I bring friends there, however, we like to keep it quieter and more private, so we’ll camp at Hansen Creek or Knowles Canyon, or often right here in Bullfrog Bay. They’re more secluded, more private, more in keeping—I think—with the inspirational Defiance House experience.

An Ongoing Mystery

The Ancestral Puebloans vanished years ago. They’re a tribe that’s simply gone. Archeologists have different theories about why they vanished (soil depletion? climate change?), but no one knows for sure. Which means—and this is what I like to tell visitors—that this is a mystery that you can ponder, and maybe even solve, on your own! It’s a neat thing to think about when you’re standing in the exact spot where these people spent their lives, centuries ago.

One of the great things about houseboating at Lake Powell is the sheer number of places to visit. Some of my colleagues have written articles about their favorite spots to bring first-timers; interestingly, each one chose a different place. So did I. For this article, I’d like to whet your appetite for visiting my favorite spot to escape from it all here at Lake Powell. And that’s the Escalante.

What it Is

The Escalante is one of the five rivers that feed Lake Powell, and it’s also one of the largest. But that’s not why it’s my favorite. I simply think it’s the coolest. It’s fairly inaccessible. You must really commit to going there. But boy is it ever worth it.

Getting There

The Escalante enters Lake Powell at Mile Marker 68. What that means is that it’s 68 miles north of the dam, at the southernmost portion of the lake. Since it’s so remote, many people think the Escalante is a Northlake attraction, but it’s actually pretty close to the middle.

If you’re sailing north from Wahweap Marina (where I’m based), you’ll see a marker buoy that says “Escalante River” when you get there. From Wahweap, it’ll take you over a day to get there by houseboat; by powerboat, count on about two hours—and you’ll need to stop at Dangling Rope marina (about midway up the lake) to refuel.

Take it Easy!

The canyon of the Escalante river runs about 12 miles, and it gets pretty narrow in the back. (We have plenty of “slot canyons” here at Lake Powell—some get so narrow, you can barely pass your shoulders through them.) If you’re going by houseboat, be sure to follow the buoy markers in the main channel to stay in deep enough water. In the back canyons, whether by houseboat or powerboat, go slow and watch out for shallow spots, which you can recognize by their lighter color.

So What Can You See There?

I guess I’ve teased you enough by this point. But that’s kind of like a trip up the Escalante. As I said, you need to commit to it.

But you’ll be rewarded for your effort and your patience. The place is stunning. The solitude is overwhelming. Climb out and explore; there are tons of ancient Anasazi ruins within hiking distance. Boat far enough, and you’ll come to LaGorce Arch in Davis Gulch. At one hundred feet high, it’s one of the most photographed spots on the lake. It offers water views on both sides.

But Can You Camp There?

There’s not a ton of beaching in the Escalante, but it can be found. I wish I could tell you about a great spot, but they come and go in concert with the water level here. Think of it this way: One foot of vertical elevation change in water level could translate to ten feet—or more—of shoreline lost or gained. The good news: No matter how many times you visit, you’ll always see something different.

What to Bring

I’d say to bring your common sense. The Escalante is secluded. You won’t find radio service. There’s no cell signal. In the deep canyons, you can’t even always get GPS. So if you’re sketchy about being totally disconnected, you may want to reconsider. This is a spot for the more adventurous, but that’s why I like it. If you’re like me, you’ll like it, too.

Some people come to Lake Powell just once. Some are regulars. Others (like me) live here all year round. But whether you come here once or often, there’s one place here that absolutely tops my list of must-see places. And that’s West Canyon.

In my opinion, West Canyon is Lake Powell at its finest. While it’s a visit for the more adventurous types, know that I’ve taken my family there, and they all loved it as much as I do. By the time I’ve finished describing it for you, I think you’ll want to check it out, too.

Getting There

West Canyon sits around 30 miles uplake from Wahweap Marina, where I’m based. (It’s easy to find on any Stan Jones map, the go-to hardcopy resource here at Lake Powell.) By houseboat, it’s about a two- or three-hour drive. That’s why I always go by powerboat: It’s faster (which also gives you more time to explore once you arrive) and a lot stingier on fuel.

You’ll see West Canyon approach on your right. Sail into it as far as you can. The water will get shallow as the canyon narrows, so once you’ve gone as far as you can, beach your boat (on a powerboat, tilt and trim the motor to ride up on the beach) and tie it off to a heavy bush or rock with the included rope.

Hoof It

Now that your boat is secure, start hiking the canyon. Follow it back. You won’t hit a trail until you’ve been hiking about a half hour, depending upon the water level at the time (that beach you used could be much higher or lower).

Now that you’ve found the trail, get ready for the good stuff.

Prepare to be Awed

After about an hour of beautiful hiking, the canyon will narrow even more. Way more. I’m 190 pounds, and I can just fit through the opening without pivoting my shoulders. That’s why they’re called slot canyons.

Once you go through that slot, the canyon opens up again, with soaring rock walls towering some ten stories above you, banded in magnificent reds and bronzes that change color with the sunlight. Ahead of you, you’ll find a beautiful pool of standing water. It’s not too big, maybe 30 feet across, but if you want to keep hiking, you’ll have to cross it. You can wade most of it, but count on about 20 seconds of actual swimming to get past the deepest part in the middle. (I once swam that in October, and it was cold!)

Continue past the water, and the canyon will narrow again, treating you to a second slot. That’s about as far as I usually go with my friends and family, but you can actually hike your way all the way to Antelope Canyon if you keep going.

Keep Your Eyes Open

The desert is usually pretty quiet, but you can catch sight of wildlife if you’re alert. There are coyotes, lizards, ravens, and hawks. I’ve even seen a rare California condor soaring overhead. Their wingspan can reach ten feet; it’s pretty amazing.

Time it Right

West Canyon is a place you want to see early in the day. In the summer, you’ll want to arrive there by around seven or eight a.m., so you can be done by around one pm, and thus avoid being there during the hottest part of the day. Bring plenty of water; you’ll need it.

Be sure to check the weather forecast before you leave. If thunderstorms are predicted, reschedule. You don’t want to get caught in a potential flash flood—and West Canyon will still be there for you when it’s sunny again.
